I am confused as to why NATO is waging a war against one of its members in defense of a nonmember country.

Nice, now to have a real effect other members need to do the same and then, buh bye globalization, it's dead like a vampire in the sun, you can't have a globalization with half the planet not taking part in your globalized networks
