If I were the dev in charge of the UI... Or even the owner of the site, I would feel weird

Imagine you go to work, and you learn that, a guy got confused by the interface you built, and he made a tragic mistake because of that. And as a result he offed himself

I mean, even if you're a full blown hardened psychopath, "I was in charge of UI design at robinhood back in jun 2020" isn't going to look that good on your resume

And this is obviously not going to make the company you currently work for (robinhood) look very good, the situation is bordering on permanent brand damage

Needless to mention that your boss is a tad sad about it... And of course nobody at the upper echelon is going to put his neck in to save your ass...

And it's not directly your fault technically, I mean, that's one customer, 1, who fucked up bad. Could have been drunk also.. Who knows, shit happens

But still, you never thought your line of work would one day lead you to get involved in such chain reaction

And deep down you can't help but think "yeah, that particular button switch down there... Yep"

"Designed to distract: Stock app Robinhood nudges users to take risks"

>Mission accomplished!

Hm

I would definitely feel a tad weird

I agree with your overall sentiment but in the end it is not their fault. Apparently this kid did not even bother taking the time to max out his credit cards on strippers and think about it over the weekend.

Technically you're right

Now when you're in situation and you're the dev who was in charge of that particular part of the project... Everybody knows who you are...You are the UI guy who designed THAT particular part

And you know it too, and you know that they know

It's not a day like any other, that day you discover what went wrong

If anything that's all i'm saying

Of course nobody is going to throw it at your face and everybody will pretend there's nothing and everybody gets back to work, get back to the normalcy they were in before, and try to forget all about that story as fast as possible

And then at some point, the UI guy starts pondering what if all of this, was wrong

What if, that margin setting, is in only a trigger here, the tip of the iceberg, what if what we are enabling/contributing to here, is plain wrong

And then of course he has to skip because life continues and there's shit to do, and his job pays the rents, and he has rents to pay

And of course he saw the face of that guy in the press, it's no longer "just someone somewhere", if it ever was

Yep

You're on your own with your own mind, a great moment of loneliness in the history of loneliness
