Honda employs a lot of contractors. According to estimates I've read, people indicate that 70% can be contractors in some departments. Much of their maintenance and gruntwork R&D is all contract, so good luck unionizing that.
The FBI broke the mobs protection racket where a business would have to pay them protection money to stay in business. Now it's called union dues...
I was part of an IBEW local for a while, the dues were fairly reasonable and they did get us a lot when the company decided to shut the doors. I did see some of that corruption that's ever-present in that kind of thing, but all in all it helped us regular folk quite a bit - especially when the company wanted to not give raises or anything one year.
Turned out they were lying about record profits so there really wasn't any money to give, but when all you have is a piece of paper that says "YAY MONEY!" you ask for some - and we got it.

You're correct and they can't unionize those people. I am sure Honda got a chuckle out of what the UAW said.
I'm sure they did.
Honda is a demanding place to work for regular employees, but they pay well. UAW may have a hard time getting to those people as well. However, there aren't as many regular employees that can be unionized as most think - lots of salaried people.
I know plenty of people that have worked at Honda, but very few (1 actually) that have worked FOR Honda.
A few years ago when I was still in the consulting racket, I met people who were contractors at Honda. Come to think of it I don't think I know of anyone who works for Honda. Now I do know people who worked for Toyota down in Erlanger when the office was still there.
Yes.
I've been called about numerous jobs at Honda over the years, none have been employees. One of my former co-workers there recently lost his contract gig when the UAW was on strike because it cancelled some battery project that was joint with another maker.
