There's still an ABB XY recorder laying around here, which we used to record RFI levels in combination with a Schwarzbeck RFI receiver. All analog and very prone to drift when getting up to operational temp. It's claim to fame was its electrostatic backplate to hold the paper.

HP loved photostuffs. The old nixie tube equipment used neon bulbs on photoresistive plates to generate the logic for the tubes.

It's both magic and science.
