Introduced in August of 1981, the Honda Gyro-Cator was the first in-car navigation system. Using helium gas in a specialized gyro, car movement and position was able to be tracked while a servo on the transmission allowed the computer to monitor speed and distance. A transparent map (section of Japan) would be locked into placed and moved accordingly to the position of the car.
