Don't knock those cheap rat shack irons, I used those for years - still have a small pencil tip (ungrounded) unit with a removable heater that was my go-to for a long time.

Yeah, I am fairly sure I still have one in storage. They are not safe but they do work.

I like my nicer digital temp controlled rig though.

Sometimes you need to put 200W into a chassis to make the damn solder melt.

I like it, extra handy when you need to solder SMDs. It can reflow pretty well.
