There's also the fact that movies used to be shot on film that was processed Technicolor III.

The Technicolor III process (three filmstrips, one for each RGB color) was well known for having bright, popping colors - reds especially - and filmmakers took advantage of that. DIgital filmography allows the video to be processed however you want, and the current trend is "dark as a nigger on moonless night in a cave."
