It happened in the UK, where the household current is 220 volts at 50 hertz. That'll cook you like a hot dog.

[–] 2 pts

Eh I've gotten 300 volts no big deal. Think it was DC. AC is harder to let go off iirc.

Pops is an electrician (I’m an “audio electrician”), and he always told me to touch with the back of your hand so you just fall, hopefully away. Also, AC swings to 0v, so you got 60 short chances a second to leggo. He always mentioned how DC will just lock your muscles up.

[–] 2 pts

Back of your hand because the power will cause your muscles to contract and grip the wire of touching with the inside of your hand.

[–] 1 pt

Yeah I sorta pretended to be an electrician for 2.5 years. Made decent money too.

DC is how defibrillators work. stops the heart (contracts) then releases it and hopefully normal rhythm follows. 440 AC will knock you away where 120 AC will hold you. It's the frequency that does you in but it usually has to travel through your body rather than just through your hand.

Oh I've gotten over 2,000 volts DC before, off a He/Ne laser power supply I was mishandling, but fortunately for me it was operating at about .0015 amps. Still felt like I'd been shot with buckshot though.

[–] 3 pts

Yeah those amps'll get ya

[–] 2 pts

How often do you get shot?

[–] 0 pt

DC is what won't let go because it's Direct Current. Alternating Current will zap you and immediately let you go.

Double the potential for fun!

Why does UK run that standard?

[–] 4 pts

Higher voltage = less amperage needed for the same number of watts = smaller cabling can be used.

Same reason most high-speed trains use 25kV (AC). Local trains use 1.5kV (DC), but for the wattage required, the amperage increase would require the overhead cables to be much thicker (and therefore heavier & more expensive to manufacture, install, and support).

[–] 1 pt

Ah, so sacrifice a little safety for a cheaper install?

When I was a child I was a stubborn fuck head. Gramps had an old school DC electric fencer that was just a constant live current. Told me to stay away and if I was gunna touch it use the back of my hand becausez if I grabbed it I wouldn't be able to let go. As he was also a big jokester I called his bluff and he had to hip check me off the fence. Deathly afraid of electrocution to this day and that was almost 20 years ago.

As a child I had an incident outside with a lamp socket on a cord and my hand touching it and grabbing on. Father ripped the cord from my hand. I didn't develop conscious phobia of electricity, but my fucking dreams often have powerlines on the ground or close by, or they're everywhere in the air when I have flying dreams. Definitely left a mental scar.

My shoulder hurts just thinking about this. Dead shoulder for 48 hrs at the minimum

I hate when these stories happen and the parents act incredibly distraught or shocked or amazed. Its clear they're simply trying to prime the fire for a law suit of some kind. That's all people care about today... and for a few decades now.

Alexa is not a real person. Alexa is a search engine with a few commands that allow you to turn of the lights and order milk.

I hate Bezzos more than the guy next to me, but I hate more the media that intentionally misrepresent stories for clicks or to promote an agenda.

I am not naive to believe there is no agenda behind this. Even if there is none, i am not naive enough to believe the media won't weaponise this.

Nost likely to promote and push for nore internet regulation, censorship, control of search engines, crack down on wrong think, trolling, bullying and other bullshit like thay.

[–] 1 pt

Exactly. So how the hell can they avoid this in the future? They'll have to curate things more, which means more potent leftist propaganda answers than before. We need a Tay smart speaker. I'd pay good money for that.

I successfully replaced all my light fittings without dying.

UK plugs and sockets are safe as long as you aren't a total fucking fruitloop.

[–] 1 pt

Respect electricity, know what you're doing, and it's perfectly safe to work with.

It's magic, but it's not chaos magic.

Tide Pod challenge next?

This is why you don't rely on AI for instructions. Always discern and don't train children to blindly follow AI.

overrated story, yeah, it's not a good idea but more than likely, the girl would have gotten burned fingers before she got shocked. Electricity follows the path of least resistance and the current would have gone through the penny rather than the girl, possibly popping the breaker before the penny could heat up much. probably a few sparks as well. it's like the old trick of finding which breaker the outlet is on, use a piece of wire in the outlet, it sparks a bit but doesn't shock you before the breaker pops. if the girl was barefoot and standing in water. then yeah, she is going to get shocked. sneakers; not a chance.

[–] 0 pt

I put a paper fastener in an outlet and it just got hot.

I think people tend to exaggerate the dangers of electricity for control over others. Yes , electricity is dangerous but it is also very useful. should a kid be putting a penny on the cord's prongs, No, but they overstated the dangers of what she did. It would also depend on where the receptacle was located, Bathroom, kitchen, it would possibly be a GFCI outlet that would trip if a tiny current ended up going to ground. but alas, I'm no expert (not due to lack of training) so I'm just basically rambling. lol

[–] 1 pt

Fucking US plugs. EU plugs have insulation at the bases of the prongs.

One time the TV antenna fell behind and shorted the prongs of a partly-in plug. Melted the antenna and tripped the breaker.

go ahead. 1 penny wont even touch the contacts
