Hence why locking the Bios with EFI was so important, remove the ability to sideload Linux on the laptop completely

That EFI piece of garbage never made much sense to me

It worked just as fine before it, even better. You only get extra hassle with that crap, there's no upside worth mentioning when it comes to it, at least as far as home computers are concerned

Only this year did I switch to UEFI. The main benefit is having multiple bootloaders (e.g. Windows and Linux) and selecting among them at boot via F12.

I could do that through grub before UEFI, except I used arrows instead of f12 to select my boot OS

In fact since UEFI it's more complicated to boot on a USB key now

What seems to me to be the most troubling aspect of this is that it is, IMO, a path to establishing the illegality of modifying your PC -- e.g., legal precedent that modifying a piece of hardware's vendor-shipped configuration, for example, to put a non-Microsoft OS on it (like Linux) is equivalent to theft, as you're denying the vendor cost recuperation by bypassing the ad revenue.

Total and complete control of what, how, and when you can do anything has always been Microsoft's goal and always will be. And yes, systemd and Lennart Potterfuck remain the biggest lurking existential threat to FOSS.

I haven't heard of this one in a long time. it must be thirty years ago that this was the Next Big Thing. Cheap PCs with ads built in.

What a hilariously dystopian fever dream...

But it's becoming reality. Same for our AR goggles: the free version will be free due to smart-ads that attach to objects based on live AI analysis and adaptative learning. Empty milk carton? It will advertise the nearest major supermarket that can afford to take out ads for milk.

All the while milking your every action for as much data as possible.

Ads are mind-rape. Someone is putting an idea, thought, or image into your head that you didn't ask for and don't want. And it's brutal rape because they will penetrate your cerebrum as hard and as often as they possibly can. TV. Radio. Streaming services. Browsing the web. Playing a game. Billboards on the road. Skywriting. Embedded in "news". Everywhere you look and everywhere you go, they want to mind-fuck you without your consent.

Don't they already have ads in Microsoft Windows?

A PC without ads can already be had cheap. This seems like a way to get money from the group of people who won't buy into the subscription model.
