What if you're in China, don't have a server set up elsewhere, and VPN is the only way [you know how] to access normal internet like gmail, YouTube or even voat now... let alone the naughty videos during wifie's time of the month (that's a joke)

Ok, so I have to run it through a server with my name on it.. doesn't that defeat the point.
Really worried about the VPN selling you out? Use two VPNs. The first won't be able to distinguish you from the rest of the traffic hoping from one VPN to the other. The second won't even know what you are looking at to sell you out.
Plus if a VPN hands information over about any party once, it's going to be documented because who wouldn't contact every security blogger to get retribution after a VPN handed over information. That VPN will never be a successful business given the number of VPNs that have never handed over information. There are terrorists on the internet. It's not going to be you they sell out.
The only risk then is if all of a sudden they hand over all logs all at once in one suicide of their businessmen. If you use two VPNs or a VPN+tor, then those logs are going to be useless.
Frankly this guy is giving an opinion. A VPN is better than using your own IP address. A VPNs will ditch you so fast because the majority of their users really really don't give a shit far more than VPN users.

Just use a VPN through your neighbor's WiFi. Pay for it with a VISA gift card paid for in cash with your neighbor's name on it.
