Note: I live a long, long ways from the coast.
Also note: Lobster is delicious - and you can get it at dirt cheap prices if you know the right people.
Sounds like you might know some right people. You are a hell of a lot closer to the coast than I am. Closet thing I’ve got water wise is the Great Lakes. Don’t get me wrong they are nice to swim in and boat in. I once took a large jet ski pretty far out in Lake Michigan. But no lobster or crab in those waters. So Maine was on the list of places to go once upon a time when we bought an rv and wanted to travel the country.
Well, swing on over! We have large inland lakes, but nothing like the Great Lakes. Those are pretty awesome. I think my favorite place (on the lakes) is as you leave Buffalo. If you head out and keep the lake on your right, like you're headed towards NJ, there's a nice little rest area.
It looks tame, but the wind whips across there. Even more fun is the giant windmills that they have. They are huge! With the wind as high as it is, you can hear 'em from all that ways away. It's epic and really helps to remind us of how small we are and how giant Mother Nature is.
And the trick is to hang out at the bar. Go to the coast and hang out at the bar. You'll find a lobster fisherman. Buy him a drink and be nice. Ask him questions - and be kind enough to actually listen to the stories and the answers.
Now, ask if you can come down to the wharf and get lobster at 'boat price.' They prefer you get 'em in bulk, but that's not mandatory. They'll give you prices that are pretty much wholesale prices. In other words, you can buy 'em at the same price everyone else buys them at when they come off the boat. That's called 'boat price.'
I've even been out to help 'em pull traps. It's rugged work, but it's kind of fun. I've gone a half dozen times, maybe a bit more. That's not mandatory and you can just get 'em at boat price by being nice to them. If you give them a bit more than boat price, that's even better. They'll chuck you soft-shell at dirt cheap and the best of the lot for hard-shell.
I think I paid $2.25/pound for hard-shell lobster the last time? It was like $1.50/lb for soft-shells. I get a bunch and then have myself a lobster feast. They're delicious.
Lobster is so common that some of the local McDonalds actually sell lobster rolls. They're actually good chunks of lobster tail and are surprisingly good. They're real lobster and it's not the cheap mixed ground stuff from seafood salads. It's whole lobster meat. I think they're like $5 or $6 each. They're even sized pretty well. And no, that's not a typo - I mean McDonalds, the same franchise thing you're able to stop at and get a Happy Meal.
