I hate that shit, you are going to plug it and nope, wrong side! So you have to look at it basically... And evidently the entry point is on the sides. I mean it's stupid, there shouldn't be a potential for failure when you plug it

Making USB devices is needlessly complex compared to traditional serial protocols, and non-free. The wire length limits are also terrible. They may as well have gone with ethernet + poe, which is better in every respect and similarly complex to implement in hardware devices.
Indeed, USB is not perfect, and technically by no means a substitution for ethernet/LAN cables, but certainly very practical for its own purpose.
