Planned obsooescence is a time bomb in products, particularly electronics by [Apple](/s/crApple). It means deliberately making a device become defunct sooner and components last for a shorter time. It is a tactic to make people purchase their next product sooner (after the deliberately shortened lifespan of their previous product expired). # Should planned obsolescence be **outlawed?**

>If the government doesn't regulate the market, then there can be no monopolies.

Nigga please, what is this bullshit?

Of course there can be monopolies, why do you think standard oil got dismantled?

Man, your naivety is shocking

What makes you think, you, the peons, are going to prevail in a "free market"?

He who has the gold makes the rules, with or without .gov, might is right

You still haven't explained how adding more government intervention is going to stop monopolies.

The govt controls nearly every aspect of the market economy. So, why exactly are there still monopolies? Bigger monopolies than have ever existed in the history of the world. Why is that? We have anti-trust laws, there shouldn't be any monopolies!

As a thought, would pharma companies be so huge if, the moment they created a drug, the generic version was produced and sold? No way. Instead, they get to secure their product for 70 years, setting the prices as high as they'd like, and no one can do anything about it because they've got the government securing the patent. Anyone making a generic version for 5,000% cheaper will get arrested by the govt--not the pharma company.

A free market economy means those participating in the market (you and me) get to buy whatever we want, and deal with the consequences accordingly. No company gets a leg-up because they've got government backing. Everyone plays on the same field. Standard Oil got massive because they essentially got luck and struck a massive swell of that black-gold. If I recall, however, they used their money and influence to negotiate cheaper transpiration rates. I can't recall if it was from the govt, or just deals they worked out with the railroads.

The fact remains, Standard Oil got "dismantled", but there are still only a handful of energy superpowers. Nothing changed. Just the name of the companies.

When will you fucking understand the problem isn't with the gov but with shitty people?

You think what? That the gov is a magic machine running on its own?

It's made of people

And the more the gov harbors shitty people the more the gov is shitty

And where do you think those people come from?

Another dimension?

No

It's "your fellow citizen", "your" own society manufactures them

Damn

You can remove the gov those shitty people are still there, and wherever you put them they'll shit over everything

The only parameter stopping them is the law, until they shit this one too, and then the gov collapses utlimately and it's anarchy shithole all over the place, and then you get your anarcho free market capitalist horror

Damn

the problem isn't with the gov but with shitty people

I fully agree with this statement. Not sure what you're going on about, though. Seems like you think I don't understand that fact.
