If the first amendment protects Communists then it probably has some problems.

Free speech is good. When you can openly debate ideas, communism gets shut down pretty quick.

The issue is when the opposing views to communism are censored as tagged as hate speech, then you no longer have true free speech, and leads you to where we are today.
