Everyone thinks the manual transmission is some black magic box where stuff happens and power comes out. It couldn't be further from the truth, the transmission is stupidly simple.
Gears freewheel until you shove the synchronizer sleeve over the gear and lock it to the driveline, and then power gets sent to the wheels.
The only bearings are needle bearings the gears freewheel on, and bearings for the input, counter, and output shafts. All manual transmissions use a input, middle/counter/intermediate, and output shaft. You need a counter shaft in order to have the gears free wheel, it also makes the transmission more compact as you can put synchros on both the input and counter shaft, since they're both connected to the output shaft.
