I honestly dislike electric it’s what I have now but I’ll switch to gas when I get the chance.

I’m curious what everyone else thinks?

Depends on the electric.

I used to be 100% gas, but I switched to one of the glass-top electrics and I love it. Super easy to clean and heats up fast.

If it's the old coil style electric stoves, those suck ass.

If there is a power outage, I have my grill, dutch oven, or any of my camping stoves to use, so I'm not worried about that.

I've never had one of the flat top ones, only the coil kind. Never liked them. Maybe I'll try one someday.

I have a small kitchen, so it actually helps as extra counter space when I'm prepping food too.

Definitely gas stove.

I'm on the right side of history on this one I think.

Gas. 1488

Gas is better in an emergency no electricity needed

[–] 2 pts

This would be my reason for recommending, if it already has gas plumbed like @chags notes.

Gas. My family going back to being a kid always had gas. I had one grandma with an electric. My wife grew up with electric, but now prefers gas. As for my own personal family, we've never had anything but gas.

So ... long story short ... gas.

You can't beat an open flame while cooking.

Plus, in most cases, I think gas is a cheaper alternative. With the US being an oil and gas superpower, prices are more reasonable, IMHO.

Plus when the power goes out, your stove still works all you need is a lighter, dude with the electric stove is SOL

My family going back to being a kid always had gas.

Context!

lol

My dad always blamed it on the dog.

Did he ask you to pull his finger?

[–] 1 pt

lol, no, but I had an uncle that did.

If it's plumbed gas, I guess it's a matter of cost. If it's tanks, there's the "oh no we ran out of gas" in the middle of the cake. I know, you don't even know what's this gas in tanks I'm talking about... 3rd world, man. 3rd world.

[–] 4 pts

I cooked on a propane stove for quite a while, it was interesting cooks differently than natural gas does. I suppose in the third world you'd probably be better off with a wood stove.

Wood stove is a dream, but too much trouble. It cooks like heaven, tho. Nothing like cancerous fumes making your meat delicious.

[–] 2 pts

I’ve got a wood stove but it’s the kind for heating not cooking.

Not so old school ... many places (at least back East where I grew up) still have the big silver tanks outside.

Gas. If I'm going to use electricity to cook my meals, I'll take it in the vastly more cost effective form of a microwave oven and be done with it.

[–] 4 pts

Microwaves are nice, but they tend to not evenly heat things in my experience. See hotpockets as an example.

I've had hot pockets once and I won't lie. I didn't like their taste and do not understand how people can eat that stuff, but back onto the subject of microwave ovens...

I've found when reheating meals, the even heat will depend on two factors. The temperature of the meal before heating and its sugar content. I never put anything frozen into the microwave, only thawed. I never put a meal into the oven without a cover, be it a glass or plastic container cover to retain moisture. If the meal has an accompanying sauce especially if I know it has sugar in it, I put the sauce jar in a pot of hot water on the stove to heat up, so it goes without being said I don't buy sauces, I usually just make my own and keep them in glass jars.

[–] 2 pts

Interesting, I had not considered the sugar content as a factor when using the microwave.

Electric. I prefer to avoid gas as much as possible.

However, thing cook differently on a gas stove than they do on an electric

Edit: Part of why I don't like gas is because of constant gas leaks at my house when I was a little kid. My mom had the gas company out to my house multiple times and finally had the line cut altogether

[–] 2 pts

They do. And Propane vs Natural gas even cook differently.

[–] 1 pt

I didn't even realize there was a difference between cooking with propane and natural gas

[–] 2 pts

Yeah propane oven burns differently, my RV has a 3 burner propane oven and we use it and have to modify cooking times on everything when we use it.

Gas tends to be my favorite by a long ways. Induction can be good sometimes, especially for boiling water quickly.

The smooth top electric non-induction ones tend to be the worst.

[–] 1 pt

See someone else in this thread said the smooth top electric ones are the best they've had.

[–] 2 pts

I have never personally used induction, but I have seen it in action, and it appears to be amazing. Everyone I know with an induction stove top absolutely loves it.

[–] 2 pts

Lived with electric for almost 30 years, then when I moved to a place with gas, I was suddenly enlightened. I love gas, and could never go back.

[–] 2 pts

Yeah I've had both and I have found gas is way better.

When you turn a gas stove off it's off.
