I lived it for years! CDC mainframes running in batch mode when I started. Piss off the sysop and your card deck (yeah, I started out reading hollerith cards into the system in the 70s) was pushed to the back of the shelf. Scheduling was entirely managed by the sysops.
Ah, the good old days.
