It's not that complicated. For decades, roughly seventy (oops seventy years), there have been men whose names you've never heard in places you've never heard of doing experiments you've never thought of on people you've never met, all with the aim of getting you to think whatever they want. This all started before any of us were alive. All we can do is learn to spot it and teach anyone who cares enough to overcome it how to reverse it, or at least try.
