Not true. The colonization of America was not possible until after gun powder was ubiquitous among western militaries. Vikings attempted it but without guns they got pushed back. The ships were to slow and small, supply lines were too long, the native populations too big, and steel didn't give enough of an advantage to make up for those factors. Once you get bigger faster ships, guns, artillery and a lot of financial incentive then it's doable.
