I never understood this. So if some thug decides to start punching me or my loved ones, I have to engage him in a "fair fight" meaning the criminal has a 50% chance to win? In my mind, if you attack innocent strangers, you don't deserve a fair fight. The defenders should be allowed to take every advantage against you.

More than this. A free man can defend threats to his family, or to strangers. A free man can defend his property from theft of destruction. But are we that free? If someone tries to burn down your house, and you shoot him, what happens? We should be free to shoot any fucker who tries to assault us, or steal from us, or destroy our property. Shoplifters should be shot on sight, in my humble opinion. It would reduce the amount of shoplifting damned quickly.
