Disagree with OP's substitution of the term, "victims", for, "attackers". None of them were "victims". All three were voluntary active, and equal participants in an incident that, if they'd had their way, Kyle would be dead. They did everything in their power to make that happen and they failed. Failing to succeed in an attack using lethal force does NOT make them "victims".
It's either a purposeful mischaracterization, or it's just plain lazy thinking.
