One time when I was about 19 I was rocking out at the stop light of the grocery store plaza and my light turned green. Did a quick glance for pedestrians and proceeded on my left turn. Now, the road I was turning onto was a 50MPH zone. As I'm about to turn I look to my left and see a car grill barreling towards me. I ditch all the controls and dive across to the passenger door handle and pull as hard as I can. I get hit dead center of his grill right where my torso would be. My car goes spinning across the intersection. I seem relatively unharmed aside from being dazed and the adrenaline pumping.
Manage to get out and run over to the other car. It's some dude probably in his 70's. A tad bloody and barely able to communicate. Eventually he gets taken away in an ambulance and I drive my now slightly U-shaped Grand Am back to my apartment a few blocks away. Tires squealing the whole time.
I'm super lucky I had that second or less to react. Otherwise my head would have smacked into the window/B-pillar resulting in brain damage or death. I walked away with the biggest bruise I've ever had on my hip and thigh. Pretty sure it bruised my pelvis.
Damn, glad you managed to survive that.
Thanks. I had a few 3-ring binders worth of school work in the back seat. Shit exploded. Pages everywhere in the car, even picked some off the street. Was definitely missing some that blew away.
Saved by not wearing a seatbelt
I was. The point of lunging and pulling was to get my head and torso away from the point of impact.
