Some leftists/brainwashed are genuinely brainwashed and stubborn, but I think people may give cult-followers too much credit by saying they are just not "self-aware," some, I think, do understand they are in the wrong and they do not care, because they gain too much being immoral than to try to not be hypocritical.

Oh yeah , many know full well what they're doing , but figure they have enough money or power that they won't have to deal with the fallout
