Separate these two things; crying to communicate and crying to get what they want. There is nothing wrong with crying to communicate a NEED vs a WANT.

Since babies are non-verbal they have different cries to communicate a need depending on whether they are hungry, injured, scared, soiled, need comfort, etc. Learn to recognize these. If you want to help the baby avoid crying when communicating, you can introduce signing at around 6-9 months. They can then use signs to let you know what they need.

Crying for a want is a different thing and can be corrected by other means.
