Look up what Bella Dodd said after she was brought back to Christ by the Venerable Fulton Sheen.
Dodd was an active member of CPUSA. She claimed she learned the Party had an active effort to infiltrate the Catholic Church during the mid-century. If true, those Manchurian priests would start to have gained leadership positions in the '70's. Hey, when did the Church start going to shit again?
Additionally. Remember that Soviet-style subversion is not about directly taking control. It is about weakening the existing power structure, creating a power vacuum, then taking control as a "savior." Ref. Bill Whittle and Yuri Bezmenov.
The Church was a moral backbone of the United States. Weakening this institution absolutely would be a subversive target. The Church actively hides paedophile priests, shuffles them around, to avoid prosecution.
Justifiably, this really pisses the public off. What better way to destroy the moral authority of the Church than for these Communist infiltrators to simply protect paedophiles from prosecution?
