When I was away I was having a beer with my father and some chicken and chips. This poorly spoken mumbling homeless guy came up and started rambling to us. I looked at the guy and just ignored him. When he kept going I looked up and said no and then my father said go away. We were close to a cathedral and he started to ramble on about in broken English about Jesus and pointing to the church. I don't go to a physical church but I do believe. So I have guilt about not doing what potentially could have been the correct thing which I'm not sure what that would have been. Would I give him money or a couple chips? Personally I've had bad experiences with homeless people over the years as well I'm sure a bunch of people on here have.

Basically what you did: just ignoring him.

I've learned to overcome my white guilt simply by recognizing it.

Life is intrinsically unfair, it can not be made so. There is (((evil))) in this world exploiting white guilt and that annoys me greatly. I'm also annoyed that we can't have nice things because white people have been manipulated into false compassion by subsidizing and enabling people to infiltrate high trust society with no trust/no empathy.

It depends on the color of their skin.

If they’re white, I will say I don’t have cash, and something like, “come on man…you should be working.”

If they’re not white, I look at them in disgust

Carry around fake movie money and give them a twenty out of the kindness of your heart.

I saw a homeless man in Columbus once. He had a sign that said "anything helps". I offered him a hug and he declined. Fucking liar.

The ones in cornlumbus are often bussed in. You don't look nice and clean when you're homeless...

I've seen them far outside the area, for example at the intersection of OH37 and I70...there's nothing there but corn and a little hit in the road called Luray. You're not staying anywhere near here.

One dude had a nice lawn chair that he'd leave overnight, he'd turn it over to make it look like it was truck flotsam. I was going to stop and pick it up one morning but I think someone got to it before me.

[–] 1 pt

What a missed opportunity. Think how irrevocably worse off you are now for lack of that chair.

Most professional homeless people, like the one you encountered, is looking for his next high. Never give these people money. There are some exceptions but far and few between.

If you give a black homeless tree fiddy, and they go use it to buy crack, overdose and die, is that a good or a bad outcome?

[–] 2 pts

Hmmm.....consider my mind officially "blown". I guess I need to have "drug money for black bums" on hand.

I live in an upper middle class enclave, in Commiefornia. If they are White, I ask them where they are from, if they say somewhere that is not this enclave I say go back there and seek help from your community. If they say here, I ask "where did you go to school" if they answer with a college, or a DEI'd name of the local schools I know they are lying and just walk away. I have yet to meet a real local homeless. If any other color, I just look in disgust at them and continue on with my life.

[–] 1 pt

Man I’d be surprised to learn that anyone raised where we were raised turned out homeless. I wouldn’t be surprised to know how many drug addicts are from our enclave, but I’d bet they aren’t homeless.

Also remember: our enclave hosts more homeless per populated square mile than any other county in the USA. AND we have FOUR homeless facilities and the idiots who live here (not you and me) want MORE.

Seriously we need a big fire to take out the central tent city in the middle of town. It’s growing out of its boundaries now. I can’t wait to GTFO this “beautiful enclave”. Fuck this place and all the assholes who have corrupted it.

My rule is I don't give cash. If they are waiting outside a takeout restaurant I'll order them a meal, and a large water bottle.

If they only want money I assume they're just grifting. The professionals out here that haunt the medians and highway off ramps make more than I do.

[–] 1 pt

Exactly. A few years ago i drove past a beggar an a street corner. A few minutes later I passed by again and watched as he ended his shift, walked across the parking lot, and got into a car that was much nicer than what I was driving. I ignore them.

Bingo. If I ever retire, I'd love to just investigate homeless people and see what they do all day, and where they go. With a drone, it wouldn't be hard.

The downtown of my once fair city has been overrun with the growing ranks of the junkie zombie hordes. I usually ignore them. If they persist, I look them square in the eye and ask, "Do I really look like the guy you want to fuck with today?" This ends the interaction.

[–] 2 pts

I beat them to the chase. I ask them for a dollar first.

[–] 1 pt

LOL. That's what I used to do. I live out in the middle of nowhere now. No beggars...

[–] 2 pts

I also just say 'no'. If the beggar knows where the church is, then the beggar also knows where the soup kitchens are. The church staff would also point out info on homeless shelters to the beggar.

[–] 1 pt

Good point.

Re the church - that's why there are no homeless camps on church parking lots and homeless only line up when the church holds a soup kitchen, then go away again. The shelters in your area house and feed them regularly or they know which church on what day does the soup kitchen. If you feel you need to do something, you can donate somewhere or volunteer your time to help. Some people really need help and there are resources out there.

In my area I'm also aware of a cardboard sign at a freeway offramp that is stored there and used by a rotation of different panhandlers, like they had an agreement or something.

Your first point makes sense. That's probably the safest thing to do. The fellow was clearly deranged. I saw him earlier in the week walking around making really weird noises like he was possessed.
