For me I usually check the fish consumption analysis on any particular water I'm fishing. Minnesota DNR has a lake finder app that's shows this info. With that said I usually fish for sport unless I get into the walleyes, then I'll keep a few for a meal or two. One other issues is this fucked up state loves to put slot limits and possession limits on many different bodies of water here. You need to know the rules to the body of water your fishing.
