Excuse me for being dense, what's a direct image link look like?

That's because the link is a fake direct image one. It actually leads to an html page.

You must right click (long tap on mobile) on the image and copy the link:

Best way to check is to open the link (that ends with one of the above mentioned extensions) in a new tab, if it's an image without colored background and html element, it's most probably a direct link.

direct image links are ending with one of the supported image extensions (jpeg, jpg, png, gif)

Well looks like pasteboard is also blocking remote requests.

Try another image host.

I'll add local single image upload soon, and albums later next week.
