At least Santa was based on an historical figure Saint Nicholas of Myra, Santa Claus evolved from Nick's Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas). He was then commercialised by the Coca-Cola company and his image changed from green to red due to the psychology of colours behind marketing. Believing in god is like believing in leprechauns.
