"Looked like something was gnawing at his face". Indeed it probably was a m*fucking bot fly. They lay their eggs in shrubs and the larvae attach themselves to a passing animal. They get into the animal's body through the nose or a wound and proceed to live like jews in a parasitic state.
They create a tiny breathing hole at the skin surface and eat the flesh surrounding them until they burst through the skin. Disgusting creatures. Like jews.
I rescued a starving near death kitten once and he kept holding his head sideways and wagging it like he was deranged. Lo and behold, he had one of the gosh damned bot flies embedded in his skin right by his ear/eye. We took vaseline and covered the breathing whole which suffocates the larva; waited for the barstard to show himeself and pulled that mofo out.
That bot fly died a horrible death. The kitten because this absolutely joyful sweet loving little guy.
BTW I'd be more than happy to adopt Spaulding if he needs a permanent home.
Good on you and for saving that kitten. I am sure Spaulding will find a very loving home. If we were closer we would consider it since we have another cat that is extremely laid back and lovey.
I did donate to the shelter so I hope it helped him and them with other cats.
