Daily Devotional

January 12

35 And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. 36 But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. - Matt 9:35-36 (KJV)

Jesus went everywhere He could teaching and preaching the Gospel and healing the sick. We are supposed to be Christians (little Christ’s), and yet do we do what He did? Do you tell all your neighbors and relatives about Jesus and the people you work with? We were given the job of preaching the Gospel to others (2 Corinthians 5:18), and most of us don’t do a very good job of it. Also do we go about laying hands on the sick and healing them, casting out demons, raising the dead and all the other things Jesus did? Jesus told us that all that believe on Him would do the works that He did and even greater works (John 14:12). We are not doing all that Jesus told us to do, and He said that if we love Him, we would follow His commandments (John 14:15). The churches that are teaching that the Spiritual Gifts are no longer for us, and that they passed away with the Apostles, are simply not telling the truth. The verses they use to say this in 1 Corinthians (1 Corinthians 13:10) actually say just the opposite, as they say the gifts will pass away when we see Jesus “face to face” again (1 Corinthians 13:12). This is a doctrine of man that makes the Word of God of none effect, as Jesus said (Mark 7:13).

Jesus was moved with compassion many times, and that is showing his love, for others, was greater than his love for himself. He was always willing to serve others, even when He was tired and needing rest. Jesus would continually serve others, and then stay up all night praying to the Father (Luke 6:12), and although He was God in the flesh (John 1:14), He got tired like all of us would, and what a hectic life He led. It was all about loving and serving others that He exhibited throughout His life on earth. He looked on us as being like sheep without a shepherd (Matthew 9:36), and He was moved with compassion, to serve us like a shepherd would. Praise God for His Grace to us, by sending Jesus to be our shepherd!
