16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. 17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. - Gal 5:16-18 (KJV)

This verse is telling us to “Walk in the Spirit”, and many ask what that means. If you are born again, you have the very Spirit of Jesus Christ living in you, and you are one with Him. So to walk in the Spirit, means to let our new, born again spirit lead us, and when you do, you will not be letting your flesh lead you into temptations and sin. The Word of God is Spirit and truth (John 17:17), so you might say that when you are walking in accordance to God’s Word, then you are walking in the Spirit.

The flesh’s desires are just opposite of what the Spirit desires. So if you will walk in the Spirit, you will not tend to do what the flesh desires. It is not saying that denying the flesh will cause you to be walking in the Spirit, as that is not so. By walking in the Spirit, you will be denying the flesh to be able to control your actions, and therefore you will tend to live a holy life. You can not live righteously in the flesh, as our own righteousness is like filthy rags to God (Isaiah 64:6). You must live in the righteousness that Jesus gives a born again believer, to be righteous in the sight of a Holy God.

If you are a born again Christian, and are obeying Jesus in your life, then you are no longer under the law – Praise God. Jesus kept the law for us (Matthew 5:17), and then gave us His righteousness (Romans 3:22), so that we, through Jesus, have fulfilled the law, and are no longer under it. This is such an awesome truth as it means we do not have to do all the works of the law to try and be right with the Father, but only have to accept what Jesus did for us, by believing in Him and obeying Him (Hebrews 5:9). That is the Good News of the Gospel – Thank you Jesus for this precious gift of Salvation and Grace!
