20 And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. - Mark 16:20 (KJV)

This is the last verse in the Book of Mark, and is just after the Lord Jesus was received back up into heaven, to sit at the right hand of the Father (Mark 16:19). Mark is saying that they went, as Jesus commanded them, and preached the Gospel everywhere, and the Lord working miracles (signs) following (Hebrews 2:4). If the early church preachers needed the Word confirmed by miracles, as Jesus did, then why aren’t preachers seeing miracles following their messages today? Very few of the modern day preachers have any signs following their messages, as they do not ever demonstrate the power of God in their lives. That is in opposition to what Jesus told us to do (John 14:12), and without any demonstration of God’s power in our preaching, how can people believe that it is from God?

Some of the largest denominations teach that the “signs following” passed away with the Apostles. They use verses out of 1 Corinthians to try and say that, and that is not what the verses say. It does say that some day the Gifts of the Spirit (like speaking in tongues) will pass away (1 Corinthians 13:8), but it includes the passing away of knowledge also – which sure hasn’t happened yet. It says these things will happen when “that which is perfect is come” (1 Corinthians 13:10), and some say that is referring to the bible. The bible is perfect, but that is not what these verses are referring to. It is referring to the return of Jesus, as it says we will then see “face to face” that which is perfect (1 Corinthians 13:12), as well as all knowledge will pass away. These verses confirm that the Spiritual Gifts will be with us until Jesus comes again – Praise God, we need to use them all!
