18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; - Eph 5:18-20 (KJV)
This verse is not telling us not to drink wine, as Jesus drank wine (Mark 14:23-25), and also made water into wine for others to drink (John 2:3-11). The bible does not teach us not to drink alcoholic beverages, but just don’t drink in excess and become drunk. What we, who are born again, need to fill ourselves with is the Holy Spirit as this verse says.
One of the best ways to keep our minds upon the Lord is to continually think about the Word, as well as making melodies in our heart, and singing spiritual songs to ourselves. It is so very true, that if you put a song about God’s Word in your heart, you will not tend to forget it, as songs seem to remain with us better than just words. Paul said this same thing several times (Colossians 3:16, Ephesians 5:19). If you truly love God, you will have a spiritual song in your heart at all times, and sing, thank, and praise Him for all His blessings.
We should always give thanks unto the Lord, as He is so good to His children. One of the best ways to do this is in song and praise to Him for His goodness (Psalms 18:49). Paul wrote to give thanks unto God at all times (Ephesians 5:20), and if you are born again, how can you not give God thanks for all He has done in saving us and blessing us with all spiritual blessings (Ephesians 1:3)? Read the Psalms, and see how David wrote about blessing the Lord at all times. Praise God for His goodness, and for inhabiting the praise of His children!
