36 And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing shall be impossible. 38 And Mary said, Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her. - Luke 1:36-38 (KJV)
The Christmas Story continues. Zacharias’s wife Elisabeth, was well past the age of child bearing (Luke 1:7), and her being able to have John the Baptist in her old age, was quite a miracle. The “sixth month” is referring to Elisabeth’s pregnancy, as she was six months along in her pregnancy. Elisabeth and Zacharias had been praying for a long time, to have a son, and God answered that prayer, as they were both righteous before God (Luke 1:6), and John was to be used to announce the Messiah to the world, and pave the way for Jesus’ ministry.
What a statement, as it is for sure that nothing is impossible for God to do, and all His creation speaks that truth. The angel telling Mary about Elisabeth’s pregnancy, was a faith builder for Mary, as if God could enable Elisabeth to conceive, at her age, then He could certainly cause Mary to conceive.
This statement is awesome, as Mary not only accepted the Holy Ghost impregnating her, but she said “according to thy word”, and this is so appropriate, as Jesus was the Word (John 1:1). What the Holy Ghost did, was to take all the words of prophecy that had been uttered by the prophets, about the birth of the Messiah, and impregnated Mary with the Words. This was necessary, as God had given the earth to man (Genesis 1:26), and could not just speak Jesus into being, as He did Adam, but had to speak through mankind all the words necessary to enable Jesus to be born. God is so awesome – praise Him for bringing Jesus to redeem us.
