I haven't noticed any difference in cold sound (but also haven't tried to discern any difference).

What makes it sound cool to me is the dead silent everything else while the train horn blows at night. In the summer there is a cacophony of crickets and such, in the winter it is so... damn... quiet... especially when the wind stops for a moment.
