If the market demands horseshoe crab blood, efficient means of artificially creating the chemical compound will be created, or someone will begin farming them, or an alternative means of doing the job will be found (or, if already found, made more economical).

It's nice that the market works by driving the species to the point of extinction before coming up with a better solution only when it's forced to. A intelligent system not built on selfishness and greed would not sacrifice species for a little extra profit in the short term.
