If the market demands horseshoe crab blood, efficient means of artificially creating the chemical compound will be created, or someone will begin farming them, or an alternative means of doing the job will be found (or, if already found, made more economical).

Tragedy of the commons. The loss of a species stands on its own merits; the story's emotional appeal to "muh hospital chemical that saves YOUR LIFE!!!!" is juvenile

It's nice that the market works by driving the species to the point of extinction before coming up with a better solution only when it's forced to. A intelligent system not built on selfishness and greed would not sacrifice species for a little extra profit in the short term.

A intelligent system not built on selfishness and greed

Has one ever existed?

If you were a good person, you would be an immediate example.
