Needed for what is my question. Man I know some people used to them use them all the time. I just never got it.

We used to have to cut through 4x4s and 6x6s on occasion. Sometimes treated lumber used on piers and boat docks. It was easier to have a worm drive handy than to attach an adapter to the regular saw.

Yep. I worked with a guy who only used a worm drive. Nothing else.
Man I have cut thru many, many 6x6 with a makita, A worm drive to me would just be heavier and harder to handle. A worm drive doesnt cut any deeper.

I'm not saying you have to have one. I'm saying why we had them. They are indeed much heavier and they take getting used to.
