For a recessive gene to be active, both parents have to carry it. Based on simple probability, there's a 50-50 chance that half their offspring will have it active. If they have 2 daughters, one will be barren, likely both. That 50-50 chance is per offspring.
Also, in before the nerds hit me with ackshually...this is a simplification.
