They don't suffer from diabetes because they don't eat the crap we do, probably cancer for the same reason. Autism? Ehhhh.....
They suffer from many many genetic diseases, however. Down's and Dwarfism are quite common once you get out of the tourist areas.
Fun Fact: Amish dwarves are called millermeters.
"They suffer from many many genetic diseases, however. Down's and Dwarfism are quite common".... Oh really what is the percent diff. from the rest of the population?
I don't know, they don't release that. However, I see them often enough that it's at least a measurable amount. Last year at Johnstown Swappers Day, there was a whole group of dwarf amish being herded around. It's not uncommon to see downies there as well, and I saw a couple of them last time I went to Hazen.
One of my distant relatives in PA used to be a yoder toter. One of his regulars was a family that took a couple of their children into Pittsburgh for treatments because they all had some odd genetic disease. He did a couple of runs where families picked up and traded places with a family in Indiana because of genetic diversity.
It's what happens when you have a completely insular culture.
They’re pretty fucking healthy for being so inbred. Maybe it is the lack of vaccines.
I don't know why this was funny but I laughed while I learned.
