Strokes remind me of that juvenile science fiction book by Lester Del Rey, "Runaway Robot." In it, the robot's vision tube burned out, and he knew there was a fault, but he did not have the diagnostic programming to determine what was wrong, so he just froze and stated that he was malfunctioning. The robot's owner had to do some testing to determine that it was the vision tube.

Strokes hit you, and you know something is wrong, but we don't really have good brain diagnostic software so quite often you don't know what is wrong when it's happening to you. If we could tell we were stroking out, we could call for help way sooner, maybe take an aspirin while we wait. Instead we're just "I feel a little funny, better walk it off."
