Sir Francis Drake sailed around the world in the Golden Hind some 400 and some years ago. He kept a careful track of the days, and guess what? When he got back to London, he was out by one day. He knew he had not made a mistake, so it took him a while to realize what had happened. By sailing once around the world, he had unwound one entire day from the calendar. That only makes sense if the world is an oblate spheroid.
