And willful ignorance is the worst kind.
Might be something to do with cognitive dissonance. I have read that people suffering from it, experience physical discomfort when their "deeply held beliefs" (read programming) are challenged. That's when they lash out.
I sometimes wonder how much of that is going on in my own mind.
