Personal solar is a good idea as a supplement if you live somewhere with half-decent sunlight exposure. It tends to pay for itself in under a decade in electricity bill savings, and hey if slightly less coal has to be burned I'm not going to complain about that. As a government funded and planned venture on a large scale, like everything else, it falls flat on its face.
