I’m pretty sure one of the articles about starting out said something about no picks. I could be wrong, I’ll read them again once the guitar arrives.

A quick search of the site doesn't indicate anything of the sort - though if you'd be following by learning classical/flamenco/folk then you'd not want to start with a pick. Given that you're getting an electric, that would nullify that and you'll almost certainly want a pick. Some do fingerpick electrics (common in blues and jazz) but you might as well learn to use one.
