I believe us 23 and I75 are federal roads. These are where this has happened at least 5 times that I know of in the past 2 years. It’s crazy really I figured trucks were just getting taller.
I believe I vaguely remember reading about our highway system having something to do with the National gaurd.
Federal highways have signs have the award/plaque background on them. Around the numbers is a background that's different than your State insignia.
The highway system is meant for military use. It's meant to be able to transfer machines and people, specifically military. The reason for the width of lanes and the minimum overpass height is that military equipment is designed within those specs. Tanks are only allowed to be so wide, 'cause the lanes are only so wide. Military trucks, meant to be used on the road, are all under the minimum overpass height.
Much of the influence comes from the Autobahn. It was after the war that Eisenhower really pushed for the system of roads we now know as the federal highway system - not all of which are the toll roads. Rt. 2, going from Maine to NH, is a federally funded highway and must adhere to those standards. It is not a "limited access" highway. There are no tolls. It doesn't have exit ramps. It looks just like your regular highway, but it is a part of the federal highway system.
You have the federal highway system, the state highway system, probably a county highway system, and maybe a local highway system. Some highways are quasi-privately owned in nature.
