Oneof my old small Fender amps had tremolo. I forgot about it until I read your article. All it did was adjust the volume up and down at a preselected rate, say twice per second, or whatever. My bandmates never called the bars on some of their guitars tremolo. We were pretty anal at being precise and called them vibrato bars. You really bring back the memories!

It's surprisingly frequent, given that we've had more than sixty years to correct this. Even Floyd Rose calls 'em tremolo systems and the reason for it is rather laughable. It's all Fender's fault.

Tremolo is amplitude and vibrato is pitch. I think "whammy bar" is a good compromise.
