Both is really the ideal, but not everyone can afford both and they're two separate instruments. They aren't the same instrument and there are very different techniques used with both - but they're (usually) pretty easily transferred between them.
Pretty much everyone who sticks with it will eventually have not just both but a whole collection of 'em.
