So many folks stick to the standard tuning and it makes sense on stage. I'm half-convinced that the Black Crowes sound so bad live is that they just can't keep their alternative tunings in check. No, I'm more than half convinced. They're great in the studio, but do not go see them live. It's not worth the ticket price to see them live.
That's sad... I love their music, unfortunately it's true of many of the most popular musicians today, great records but not so great live.
They're really disappointing live. I tried to give them the benefit of doubt and went to see them a second time. It was still just sheer disappointment. It'd probably help if they did less heroin before performing. Probably...
In the studio, they're absolutely brilliant. Their songs can be a great challenge to cover.
On the other hand - I've managed to cover them in live performances and done just fine. I cheat and tune a specific guitar ahead of time, toss it in the rack, and then just switch. I do less heroin than they do before performing!
I used to drink (a lot ) and gig, I always though we sounded great, as the crowds dwindled. I came to understand that was not the case. The first time I did a gig stone cold sober was a traumatic experience.
