As a beginner, I'm told that usually songs mostly use the 1, 4 and 5 chords (e.g. C major songs mostly use C, F and G), but does this apply to modes as well? Thinking about getting started with the basics, not every esoteric possibility here. For instance, if you're in Dorian in the key of C so your root note is D and the other notes are all naturals, would the "basic" chords be D, G and A as 1, 4 and 5? Enlighten me, please.

Alas, I have no time and it's not really all that legal to experiment on humans without consent, but I'm pretty sure there's no innate skills - or at least very little. If I can get hold of anyone early enough AND they put the hours in, I'm pretty sure I can teach anyone to be proficient. Alas, setting up a control group and properly studying this is problematic.

Maybe the talent is simply the ability, desire, to choose to put in that time and dedication to any subject.

I'd agree to that. It's even a fairly rare talent to come across.

By the way, I do hope you're looking forward to tonight's thread.

I always do. I didn't post any reminders but hope we have guests.
